What is Softball?

Softball is a mixed sport (5 men & 5 women), similar to baseball. Softball is the most popular participant sport in the USA, with over 50 million Americans playing at least one game of softball a year. It is a very social sport, played outdoors during from April to September. The softball league is run by Softball Ireland and involves 5 divisions of 8 teams. Renegades Softball Club have two teams playing in Prem 1 and Division 2. There are also several weekend tournaments ("blitzes") held around the country during the summer.

The Basic Rules

Softball is run over seven innings, in which each team gets to bat and try to score as many runs as possible. A game typically lasts about 1.5 hours. The ball is pitched in underarm to the batter, who has to try to hit the ball to advance around the bases wihout getting caught or tagged out. The batting team then fields and defends the runs that it has scored. The fielders use gloves or mitts to field the ball.
